Interpretation:

This classic poem, Ode to the Plum Blossom (《咏梅》) by Wang Anshi, praises the resilience and quiet beauty of plum blossoms. Blooming alone in the cold of winter, the plum becomes a symbol of perseverance, purity, and inner strength. Even amid frost and snow, its fragrance reveals its presence—suggesting that true virtue and character shine quietly, even in adversity.

Together with the other three poems (Plum, Orchid, Bamboo, and Chrysanthemum), this completes the “Four Gentlemen” (梅兰竹菊) theme — representing noble virtues admired in Chinese culture: perseverance, elegance, integrity, and humility.

Best recipients:

• Friends recovering from hardship, loved ones entering a new chapter, or colleagues who persevered through difficulty.
