Interpretation:

This poem reflects the tranquil elegance of the orchid—a symbol of grace, purity, and quiet strength in Chinese culture. The imagery of still water and moonlight” evokes serenity and timelessness, while the orchid’s fragrance “alone beneath the autumn moon” conveys inner beauty and refinement that does not seek attention. It suggests a noble soul who remains calm and self-contained, even in solitude—a recurring theme in classical Chinese art and poetry.

Together with the other three poems (Plum, Orchid, Bamboo, and Chrysanthemum), this completes the “Four Gentlemen” (梅兰竹菊) theme — representing noble virtues admired in Chinese culture: perseverance, elegance, integrity, and humility.

Best recipients:
Professors, academic advisors, mentors, or senior executives, especially female.
