Bamboo 《夏竹》
Interpretation:
This poem uses bamboo (竹) as a metaphor for the upright and steadfast character of a noble person. Even when touched by dew and wind, bamboo remains resilient and graceful — symbolizing integrity, humility, and moral strength. The last line, “The noble one stands tall without depending on the earth’s favor,” suggests that true virtue is self-sustained and not reliant on external rewards or conditions.
Together with the other three poems (Plum, Orchid, Bamboo, and Chrysanthemum), this completes the “Four Gentlemen” (梅兰竹菊) theme — representing noble virtues admired in Chinese culture: perseverance, elegance, integrity, and humility.
