Chrysanthemum 《秋菊》
Interpretation:
This poem praises the chrysanthemum (菊) as a symbol of resilience, dignity, and inner beauty that flourishes in the cold of autumn when other flowers fade. It reflects the Confucian ideal of integrity and perseverance — staying true and radiant even in harsh conditions.
Together with the other three poems (Plum, Orchid, Bamboo, and Chrysanthemum), this completes the “Four Gentlemen” (梅兰竹菊) theme — representing noble virtues admired in Chinese culture: perseverance, elegance, integrity, and humility.
